This simulation shows how a transistor can be used as a switch turning on and off in the LED. The low base current flowing by the transistor’s base controls a larger current in the collector. The collector current power the LED. In the simulation the base current is given by the switch S1. The space key is used to run on and off the transistor and so the LED. Figure below the circuit and the simulation using an NPN transistor. For a PNP transistor the power supply polarity must be inverted.
