“Ordinary analog multimeters use 1.5 V batteries. Am I using 1.2 V rechargeable cells. Is there a problem with the multimeter?”

No. The multimeter uses the batteries to supply the resistance scale and eventually continuity with an audible warning. As there is a zero setting on the resistance scale (zero adj) it compensates for the lower voltage of these batteries and works normally.
