A recreational application of the 4018 is shown in the figure in which we have electronic dice. Each of the 4018 excites 7 LEDs which are arranged in a face-like configuration. Two ports of a 4011 complement the circuit to obtain the configuration necessary for the desired effects. The clock is obtained from a 555 that produces a random number of pulses when the pressure switch is activated. When this switch is released, the LEDs will stop in a setting that depends on the number of pulses and is therefore unpredictable. The circuit can be powered by 4 batteries or 9 V battery. See that the 4018 are wired to form counters up, as this is the number of faces in a die. Also note that the second module is excited by the first to ensure that the count is not the same number of cycles for each.
