Although it is a common configuration today, these circuits were taken from an old publication. The circuit shows how to connect the doors of a 4011 to obtain a pulsating tone generator for an alarm. The frequency of the tone is given by C2.e and the flashing by C1. Q1 can be a BD135 (in the drawing the publication has the symbol of a.PNP, but it is NPN in reality).
