This circuit was found in a Popular Electronics from the 90's. It generates a 60 Hz rectangular signal from the power grid. The transistors can be BC558 and potentiometer R7 can be 47k or 100k which are commercial values that can be found today. The supply voltage can be 3 or 6 V. The transformer has a secondary of 100 mA or more.
