We found this different configuration that uses a fluorescent lamp as a negative resistance device to generate the oscillations that feed the transformer that raises the voltage in a 1988 publication. The circuit can use lamps that are too weak for common use and that have the filament broken, because it will act as a spark. The transformer is an old analog TV flyback that has an exposed ferrite core.
