The BFO or Beat Frequency Oscillator is used to receive telegraphic signals or even modulated in SSB. The circuit is from an 1856 documentation from Sylvania, using components from that time. The coil is a 455 kHz IF transformer if this is the receiver's IF frequency with which it should operate.
