Figure bellow shows how one of the two separated counters found inside the 4518 is used as a divide-by-10 or decade counter. The 4518 contains two synchronous upward counters in the same package. In normal applications RST and EN are grounded. The counter advances one count with the positive transition of the clock signal. If RST and CL are grounded, the circuit will advance one count with the negative transition of the clock. When reset, the output goes to 0000. EN can be used to transfer the ninth count to the next counter if other units are cascaded. The maximum clock frequency depends on the power-supply voltage. For a 10 V power supply the limit is 8 MHz.
