“I have a fan with several speeds, but I use a dimmer to do a finer control. However, the dimmer makes the fan noisy and in some cases I even had it burn. What to do?"

In fact, the type of motor used in common fans is not very suitable for dimmer operation, hence the use of the motor system with taps for its speed regulation and not with an internal dimmer, which would even be cheaper. As the dimmer operates with cuts in the voltage half cycles, it tends to generate noises that translate into oscillations that make the motor noisy and even in some cases force its operation. One solution that can be tried for those with the problem is to increase the values of the components of the dimmer snubber in order to make the shape of the voltage applied to the motor smoother.
