The next formula is used to calculate the impedance of an RLC series circuit.

Formula 1

Where:

Z is the equivalent impedance in ohm (Ω)

R the resistance in ohm (Ω)

XL is the inductive reactance in ohm (Ω)

XC is the capacitive reactance in ohm (Ω)

Derivated Formulas:

Formula 2

Formula 3

Application Example:

Calculate the impedance of a series circuit formed by a 10-ohm resistor, a capacitor with a capacitive reactance of 5 Ω and a coil with an inductive reactance of 10 Ω.

Data:

R = 10 Ω

Xc = 5 Ω

XL = 10 Ω

Applying formula 3:

Z = 11,18 Ω
