This VU circuit has a different effect given using two 4017. The circuit is from 1997 documentation and is connected to the output of any amplifier. The original design did not provide for an entry protection that would be recommended. A 1k resistor can be used in series with the base of the transistor or the input. The original circuit was designed to be used in the car, but it should work with voltages from 5 to 12 V.
